Day 4: Write About Someone Who Inspires you?

It definitely has to be my grandfather.

A tall personality indeed !

He lived his life with utmost dignity ,passion and elegance.  He passed away at 92 and he was extremely healthy and fit, barring last two months in his life.

After retiring from Army Accounts Department, he settled in Pune and spent his later years tirelessly working for society.  He joined Students Welfare Association, a Pune based organisation, working toward providing education and accommodation to students from underprivileged background. He must have spent around 30 years working for this organisation and has played a huge role in growing it.

His day would start with meditation and then making tea.  By 9 AM, he would be ready in his white shirt and black trouser, every day!  He had this clothing preference before Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs made wearing same clothes everyday trendy.  His breakfast would be a nutritious laddu and a cup of milk, a breakfast that is popularised by Nutritionists like Rujuta Diwekar currently. He would have laughed at us today if you told him you are doing these things.  He worked for 8 hours a day without complaints. Consistency, moderation and dedication were some of his good habits I wish I can develop.

Apart from his social work, he was an avid TV buff. In his older years, he would hear high and I remember him sitting close to the TV watching Tom and Jerry and laughing like a child. He loved cartoons, sports.  He also loved gardening and had few plants in his balcony of which he took good care. He loved travelling and reading. He certainly was a man who took interest in life.

He was strict and none of the grand children dared to behave unruly when he was around. We were not scared of him, it was all respect. We knew he is not the man to fool around with. Sometimes students from his organisation would visit home and tell us, that we were very lucky to be related to a man like him.

I miss him! He was ethical and good natured. He was not a rich man, but money has got nothing to do with a rich life and he certainly led a rich life.

Day 3: What Are your Top 3 Pet Peeves?

I am a Mom locked up with my family for almost an year, thanks to corona!   So I am sure many women can identify with these. I am extremely irritated and 3 is too less a number for my pet peeves but currently I can count the below as my top 3.

  1. What’s for breakfast, lunch and dinner?

I absolutely detest being asked this question. With the whole family under one roof for almost a year and a daughter and a husband being picky eaters, I invariably have this question being thrown at me. When I protest, my husband changes it and asks “what are the options?”  Ughhhs!!

2) Finding empty packets of food in the snack container

With a teenager at home, I often find myself with an empty packet of snack. I am watching TV and enjoying  it and want to munch on something. I go to my kitchen cabinet and see a snack packet in the cabinet, open it with anticipation and very often I find it empty. Its really annoying, especially if the snack happens to be your favourite chips. My daughter empties it and does not bother to throw it in the dustbin. May be its her cue for me that we need a refill.  It is certainly a major pet peeve

3) Music or TV after waking up-

I love music but I cannot stand a noisy morning. I like them calm and silent. I do not even like being talked to in the mornings either. You need to give me at least an hour and half to be human enough to enjoy all these things.

Now that I have written mine, I am curious to know what are your pet peeves. Share it in comments.

Day 2: Write Something That Someone Told You About Yourself That You Never Forget

When I saw the Day 2 prompt this came to my mind instantly.

I was in school and was visiting my maternal aunt. As it was summer, she also had other relatives ,my uncle’s cousin, his wife and son visiting them.  I got along well with them and we were enjoying our stay.

The day before they were leaving, we were having lunch and talking.  The cousin’s wife who had developed liking for me said, “Oh Kavita, I think you will have no problem in your life.  Even if you go to a village you will have no issues. You have such an adjusting nature”.

It was a first proper constructive feedback I have received and I haven’t forgotten it.  to a large extent it has turned out true, though I do think I will have hard time adjusting in a village now 🙂 !

Day 1: 10 Things That Make you Happy

By nature, I am a happy person and it doesn’t take much to make me happy. So I thought the Day 1 prompt was an easy one but when I got down to listing it I was surprised that I had to think quite a bit. Happiness is subjective and the list comprises of  things that makes me happy currently!

  1. A good Night Sleep – I am struggling with this for last few days and if I get a good nights sleep then It definitely makes me happy.
  2. Good food –  Obvious choice! A tasty, spicy, savoury meal makes me happy.  Especially if it is Indo-Chineses food.  It is too delicious!
  3. Warm hugs – From my husband and daughter. It is so reassuring. It instantly lightens me up
  4. Conversations – it feels great to talk. I am a phone junkie and I end up talking almost for an hour , especially with my sister and my best friend. We can yap and yap and those calls make me happy.
  5. Compliments – I am good at receiving compliments and I feel great when I get one. I am lucky in that department too and get compliments often. So keep them coming.
  6. Long drives – with my husband and daughter with my daughter playing the DJ.  I cherish those drives.
  7. Writing – I have always enjoyed writing and since last few months I am doing it regularly and sharing. Writing really makes me happy.
  8. Tea and News paper –  My day begins with a good cup of ginger tea and reading a news paper, solving sudoku.  It definitely makes me happy.
  9. Weighing scale – It is not favouring me these days but when it goes to left it really makes me happy actually delirious.
  10. Shopping – I am surprised why it didn’t come to me instantly. These days we cant go out and shop much, so I am going through online portals and enjoying online shopping and adding stuff to wish list. It is so satisfying and makes me happy.

January 21- Flash Fiction- Fuck The Diet

Flash fiction challenge by Carrot Ranch community on rephrasing the “light at the end of the tunnel”

Sally was a chronic failed dieter who managed well for the week and blew it all on weekend. She weighed herself on Monday morning and saw a gain.

Frustrated, she started surfing the net and came across a book review in which the author describes how she managed to overcome her obsession with weight and found peace. Sally ordered the book and waited anxiously for the book with her standard weight obsessed routine.

Two days later, she received a message on her phone the book you ordered will be delivered today. Sally smiled, the book was “Fuck The Diet”
